SICC Pow Wow Initiation Project

Annually, SICC plans, coordinates and hosts the Pow Wow Initiation Project. While Pow Wows are social gatherings to celebrate song and dance and open to the public, they are also a First Nations ceremony. There are plenty of classes in Saskatoon to teach children how to dance and sing and SICC compliments these classes by offering classes that focus on the traditional knowledge associated with Pow Wows. That is, a historical overview and contemporary components of Pow Wows in Saskatchewan and cultural teachings are imparted regarding the traditions and protocols of Pow Wows and dance styles. First Nations languages will also be a component of this series of learning sessions.

Additionally for those who wish, SICC supports the initiation of First Nations dancers into the Pow Wow circle. Many First Nations youth do not have the exposure to traditional channels for the teachings that are necessary in becoming a dancer. Participants will be able to access resource people, mentors, and sources for the various materials that are needed to develop their own outfits and regalia. Youth who become interested in taking on the responsibility of becoming a dancer will be assisted in the process that is required in the First Nations tradition. SICC coordinate the SICC Community Initiation Special at the annual FSIN "Spirit of our Nations" Cultural Celebration & Pow Wow. To date, there have been 37 dancers initiated into the Pow Wow circle.
