Sacred Sites
The Saskatchewan First Nations Central Burial Site Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides for the re-interment of human remains at the First Nations Central Burial Site. The main signatories of this MOU are the SICC and
Saskatchewan Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport (TPCS). The human remains re-interred at the Central Burial Site are largely exceptional cases that cannot be resolved by burial elsewhere.
- Develop a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Saskatchewan on protection of Sacred Sites and Traditional Usage Sites;
- Meet with the Lands and Resources Secretariat staff to update the list of First Nations sites of significance. The overall intent is to take First Nations ownership of this process;
- Consult with First Nation Elders and communities on First Nations’ sites of significance. The objective is to identify First Nation sites across Saskatchewan which should be listed as an Aboriginal Heritage site for protection;
- Educate and promote increased understanding by the non-First Nations community;
- Produce a list for the Elders Advisory Council’s review and approval; and,
- Identify and mark historical sites for the purpose of educating the general public.
