Article: Distribution of Powers

Although the tribe is conceived of as the primary political body amongst the Saulteaux, this is not true. Due to the seasonal migrations that were constantly undertaken, sub units called bands existed to maintain order amongst the tribe. It is the political organisation of these bands that bound the people to their law and order. Each band had a Chief and two councillor.

The word "Chief" in Saulteaux is "Ogima-kan". Ogima literally translated into English means "somebody higher up", but is more adequately translated as "Boss". Kan translated means "the position"; therefor Ogima-kan means "the position of boss".
